My Blind Audition Performance

My Blind Audition Performance

Finally, the moment came. Was I nervous? Yes. I was a little nervous before going up on stage, although I tried to mange it in such a way that its not so obvious to the people around ME. (except you are among a very few who know and can tell when I'm nervous). But by the time I stepped on that stage, all nervousness disappeared. I was home.

What Informed my choice of song? My choice of song was inspired by the oneness that music creates among people of different race, religion and political affiliations. Today the world is is full of tribal conflict, religious and political war. There is no better time to preach peace than now. And music is one way to propagate peace and bring people together in unity and love.

Was I observing to the the judges while singing, in hope that they will turn their chairs? NO! I thought keeping a tab on the judges would mean distraction for ME. so I simply sang to the lovely audience like I would in any of my gigs. Whatever happened was to be known later.

Did I have a choice coach before the blind auditions? Yes. I ran a background check on all the coaches before the blind auditions so that I can make an informed decision on which coach to pick if I make it through the blinds . So I had a fair idea of who they are, their style of music, personality, and how they had related with their trainees in previous seasons.

How one cover song put me in front of 15,000 people.

Just before my blind audition on The Voice of Finland, I had the opportunity to grant an interview to the press crew, back stage at the voice of Finland studio. The interview was about one of my covers of the famous song Joka päivä ja joka ikinen yö, "which translates to "Every day and every single night" in English, by the legendary Finnish rock band, Eppu Normaali.

Initially, I submitted the video as one of the song for consideration for the blind auditions but I was not picked. So I decided to post it on my Facebook page. After posting it on Facebook, the cover quickly became a hit. with over 25,000 views.

As a result, I started getting messages and call from other music artist and labels for collaborations. One of these contacts led me to perform before a 15,000 size audience in Helsinki.

UB40- Kingston town (cover)

Kingston town is a classic from the reggae band UB40. I had the chance to do a cover with the lovely Niinaa Jess on smule. Had a bit of twist to it, with my native hat from the Igbo tribe in Nigeria and some igbo proverbs to go with it.   Enjoy watching.

Destiny - Zahara (ME cover)

Destiny is an inspiring song that really sinks deep into my heart. The message of the song is one that many people would relate to.  Many who are struggling and hussling to make it in life. Many who stick to their guns and are persistent about their goals. Many who desire to live the life of their dreams and passion. Many who would like to be happy doing what they love. Many who refuse to be derailed into taking other path just because every other person is towing the same path. Many who have been told they can not and will not make it. Many who believe and stay true to themselves and their destiny.

The point is, know who you are and where you are going. You have to listen to your inner self, identify your self and what you are meant to be do in life, be determined to stay on course with your vision regardless of distractions. Will Smith once said in the movie "The Pursuit of Happyness" that "Do not let other people tell you that you can not achieve something just because they can not achieve it"  No wonder the last verse of the song reads:

"People tell me its a highway and I've thought/ponder about letting go.. And I've thought of taking the route everybody else has been taking, but I know I have to find my own destiny"

Bulelwa Mkutukana popular known by stage name Zahara is an acclaimed singer songwriter from South Africa.  The Afro-soul singer known for her deep inspiring songs usually sang in her native language Xhosa and in English, has several awards to her name including best female artist and best album of the year for her album "Loliwe" in 2012 which reached double platinum in South Africa selling over 100,000 copies in less than 3 weeks making her the second person to have achieved such feat after the legendary South African singer Brenda Fassie. Zahara is a brand Embassador for the Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital. She was also privileged to perform for the madiba himself in a private session.  You can learn more about Zahara and her music on her official website www.zaharamkutukane.co.za

Budapest is a song by the young British singer and songwriter George Ezra. The song became a hit when it was released in early 2014 and was later nominated for the MTV music award for artist to watch and the Teens award for choice rock song.

George whose characteristic and unique voice presents a contrasting personality to his looks, has wowed his audience on stage and at live events. One of such events is at the BBC music awards.

Budapest is a song about a lover who is willing to forfeit all his valuable belongings to prove his undying love for his partner.

Here - Alessia Cara and ME (Duet)

I got a chance to sing "Here" in a duet with Alessia Cara on Smule sing app. The breath-taking and lyrically filled song is a masterpiece off of her debut album "Know-it-all" which was released in November 2015. The hit single which is making waves globally is based on her true life experience of a party that she once attended. Not feeling comfortable with the activities in the party and the atmosphere, the 19-year-old Canadian decided to pen down her awful experience into a song.

Alessia who started singing at a very tender age was discovered by EP entertainment, a record company based in US, after she posted several videos of her cover songs on youtube. With the help and support of her family,  Alessia discovered her career path at an early age and followed her passion and dream. Now signed to Def Jam records and on world tour, her success story will serve as an inspiration to many who are looking at following their passion and building a career around it, and as a wake up call to others especially parents and guardians who discourage their children and wards from following their dreams.

Get to know more about Alessia Cara on her official website, www.alessiacara.com.

Clemso aims for Eurovision song contest.

Finland-based Nigerian-born Afro-pop sensation Clemso, who recently released his debut music video for his single "Thief" will be contending for the number one spot at this year's Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu 2016 or simply UMK16, the Finnish National qualifiers for Eurovision song contest. The winner of UMK16 will represent Finland at Eurovision this year. Eurovision is the longest-running annual TV song competition held among European countries.

"Thief" is a song about emotional expression of  love and pain as can be seen in the musical video of a man whose heart was "stolen" despite his re-echoing love for his partner. Sang partly in English, Pidgin English and his native language Yoruba, the song fuses Afrobeat and modern pop, bringing in a fresh and unique tune into mainstream music thereby setting itself apart from the other 17 contestants. It was rated among the top 6 songs of the recently concluded UMK16 preview marathon with over 30,000 views on youtube.

Free pre-voting for the Finnish national qualifiers, UMK16, kicked off as early as 30.01.2016. To pre-vote, you will need to create an account at www.yle.fi/umk.  Clemso will be performing in the 1st semi-final on Saturday 06.02.2016 which starts at 9pm Finnish time at Yle studios, Pasila. The performance will be aired live on Finnish National TV station, Yle.

Asa - Jailer (ME cover)

Hello people! It's great to witness 2016. Yeah! and I'm glad we all made it through. 2015 was awesome and I believe 2016 will even be awesomer (if there is any such word) lol.

I have had some request in the past to make some vlog/blog post of some sort. So I decided to make this blog just to test the waters. I'm not much of a "text" guy but hopefully most of my vlog post will come with a brief text.  I would be counting on your feedbacks to decide the way forward for this blog.

As we all look forward to what 2016 has in stock, allow ME to share with you this throwback video from  a live performance of a cover of one of my favorite songs by the Asa - Jailer. Feel free to share your thoughts, suggestions and feedback in the comment below. I would love to hear from you. Until next time, Enjoy and have a wonderful 2016 experience.
